"Icons and the Liturgy, East and West: History, Theology, and Culture is a collection of nine essays developed from papers presented at the 2013 Huffington Ecumenical Institute's symposium "Icons and Images," the first of a three-part series on the history and future of liturgical arts in Catholic and Orthodox churches. Catholic and Orthodox scholars and practitioners gathered at Loyola Marymount University to present papers discussing the history, theology, ecclesiology, and hermeneutics of iconology, sacred art, and sacred space in the Orthodox and Catholic traditions. Nicholas Denysenko's book offers two significant contributions to the field of Eastern and Western Christian traditions: a critical assessment of the status of liturgical arts in postmodern Catholicism and Orthodoxy and an analysis of the continuity with tradition in creatively engaging the creation of sacred art and icons. Cet ouvrage met au cœur de son propos une interrogation simple : dans l'organisation complexe de l'espace de l'église médiévale, les emplacements choisis pour les images qui ornent les murs et les objets n'offrent pas toujours la possibilité de voir celles-ci, d'en déchiffrer le contenu. Certaines semblent réservées à des groupes de l'assemblée stationnant dans des espaces spécifiques, d'autres ne sont pas visibles depuis les principales zones affectées aux fidèles ou aux clercs, d'autres encore sont situées trop haut. Le rapport, a priori évident, entre représentation et visibilité se trouve donc souvent démenti, appelant alors une nouvelle notion, celle de présence. Analyser la tension existant entre ces trois catégories - figuration, visibilité et présence - implique une étude croisée des œuvres figurées, des monuments et des sources écrites. Les notions de mobilité et de fixité permettent également de prendre en compte les multiples jeux d'échelles à l'œuvre dans ce lieu rituel qu'est l'église, impliquant des objets, des manuscrits, des dispositifs liturgiques, des gestes, des déplacements physiques, dialoguant avec un décor appliqué au corps même du monument, épousant l'immobilité de l'architecture. Les cinq chapitres thématiques qui organisent ce volume mettent en regard différents cas issus de l'Occident médiéval et de l'Orient byzantin, selon une chronologie longue (de l'Antiquité tardive à la fin du Moyen Âge), dans une volonté de décloisonner les disciplines et les aires géographiques afin de tirer tous les enseignements d'une approche transversale de l'image médiévale.

The Latin collects assigned to each day in the typical editions of the respective missals are compared and contrasted both with their respective sources and with one another. Pertinent discussions and decisions of the Consilium study groups responsible for the post-Vatican II revisions of the liturgical calendar and Mass collects are also presented and considered. Long description: Die Eucharistie gilt als Mitte des christlichen Lebens. Dafür zeigen die alten Liturgien eine Form, die auch die „Waisen und Unmündigen verstehen konnten: Aufrichtung der Herzen zu Gott, Dank für Jesus Christus, der in der Feier zu seiner Gemeinde kommt und zur Wiederholung seines letzten Mahls auffordert, weswegen die Gemeinde Brot und Wein nimmt und um den verwandelnden Segen bittet, auf dass alle Anteil gewinnen an Tod und Auferstehung Jesu. Die vorliegende Untersuchung verfolgt Verständnis und Praxis des Mittelalters und fragt, ob und wie hier eine organische Liturgieentwicklung vorliegt und in wieweit sich daraus Reformanstöße ergeben.
